The Borough of Redbridge was formed in 1965 by the London Government Act (1963) and comprises three former areas of Essex: the Municipal Borough of Ilford; the Northern part of the Municipal Borough of Dagenham and an eastern section of Chigwell Urban District.
Redbridge's administrative headquarters are in llford, a large suburban town with a significant commercial and retail centre and residential developments, in the north-east of London.
The Borough covers 21.78 square miles and has a resident population of 257,600 (Office of National Statistics 2008).
Redbridge is ranked 143 out of 354 local authorities in England in terms of average deprivation.
There are 159 Super Output Areas (SOAs) in Redbridge, and one of those is in the top 10% most deprived.
As of December 2009 it had 197,364 registered voters. The Council is led by the Conservatives, but they do not have a majority of councillors. The Council is described as 'hung', which means that no one party has an overall majority.
Elections are held every four years and are due this year on 4 May. Throughout this website we will try to explain how the powers and responsibilities that affect the borough are distributed, how democratic structures work and can be accessed, and provide you with other useful information.
